St-Léon Gardens Is Officially Open for the Season

Source: St-Léon Gardens
The weather is finally starting to turn, and one of our favourite signs of spring is back. St-Léon Gardens at 419 St. Mary's Rd. has officially opened its doors for the season.
Even with the cool start to spring, the team is open and ready to go. They've got fresh fruits and veggies, tomato plants, perennials, and some seriously beautiful hanging baskets just waiting for a new home.
It's a family-run market that's been part of Winnipeg for decades, built on a simple idea: keep local food easy to access, and support the small Manitoba farmers behind it.
Here's what to know:
Open every single day until Thanksgiving
Mon–Sat: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Sundays and holidays: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Address: 419 St. Mary's Rd.
If you've been waiting for an excuse to start your garden, refresh the front porch, or grab something fresh for dinner tonight, this is your sign.
It's the kind of place that feels like a real Winnipeg summer is just around the corner.

Restaurant of the Week: Bar Accanto

A St. Boniface Wine Bar Made For Slow Evenings
Bar Accanto is one of those places that makes it very easy to lose track of time.
Tucked into St. Boniface next to Nola, this neighbourhood wine bar feels warm, intimate, and just the right amount of tucked away for a slower kind of night out.
The menu leans into share plates, good wine, and small details done really well.
It’s the kind of spot where the table fills up gradually, one dish, one glass, then another, and before long, the whole night has settled in around you.
Here’s what people keep coming back for:
Seasonal small plates designed to share
A wine list built for trying something new
Creative cocktails that feel just as considered as the food
A cozy, low-lit room that makes the whole night feel a little slower
📍 300 Tache Avenue, Unit 102
🕓 Tuesday–Thursday: 5:00 PM–10:00 PM
🕓 Friday–Saturday: 5:00 PM–11:00 PM
It’s a great spot for date night, catching up over a glass, or the kind of dinner that turns into the whole evening.

Spring Curbside Giveaway Weekend Is Back

Source: City of Winnipeg
There's something pretty satisfying about clearing out the stuff you don't need, and even better when someone else gets to use it.
Winnipeg's annual Spring Curbside Giveaway Weekend is back on May 9 and 10, and it's one of the easiest ways to declutter your home while keeping good items out of the landfill.
Here's how it works:
Place reusable items at the curb on your front street
Label them with a free sticker or sign so people know they're up for grabs
Anything left over should be cleared by dusk on Sunday
Skip anything unsafe, items with bed bugs, or older toilets that use 13 litres or more per flush
It's a weekend that turns one neighbour's spring cleanup into another neighbour's lucky find. Whether you're the one giving or the one driving around scouting, it's a Winnipeg tradition worth taking part in.
Pick Up Free Compost for Your Garden This Week
If St-Léon opening and the giveaway weekend weren't already enough to get you outside this week, here's one more.
The City is giving away free compost from May 8 to 10, made right here in Winnipeg from the yard waste residents put out at the curb each season.
It's nutrient-rich, great for veggie gardens, and helps your soil hold water better.
A few things to know before you go:
Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days
Pick-up locations: 1901 Brady Rd., Kilcona Dog Park (west lot), and Summit Road closed landfill site
Bring your own shovel, gloves, and containers
Limit of 100 litres per vehicle (about five 5-gallon pails)
If you're prepping garden beds this spring, this is the easiest way to give them a real boost.

City Updates
The City Will Be Knocking on Doors Starting Today

Source: City of Winnipeg
The City of Winnipeg is hitting the streets again. Starting today, water meter readers will be making their way around neighbourhoods, and your home could be on the list.
From now through the end of summer, City employees will be visiting homes weekdays between 9 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
They'll only knock at your front or side door, and they'll always show photo ID before stepping inside. As always, never let anyone in without checking ID first.
Here's what to know:
Always ask to see their City of Winnipeg ID first
Secure any pets in another room before letting them in
Not home? They'll leave a card so you can submit your reading by phone or online
Prefer to stay private? You can show them a clear photo of your meter while they wait outside
Submitting regular readings keeps your bills accurate and can flag hidden plumbing leaks early, which can save you hundreds down the road.
The program runs through the summer and wraps up on August 28, so chances are someone will swing by your place at some point in the next few months.
Winnipeg Police Launch a New Rapid Response Unit
Faster response times, more support for frontline officers, and a flexible team that can step in wherever it's needed most. That's the idea behind the Winnipeg Police Service's newest unit.
Starting yesterday, the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) has officially rolled out across the city. The team is built to take pressure off frontline officers and get to calls quicker, especially during busy stretches when wait times tend to climb.
Here's what the unit will do:
Respond to calls during busy periods so wait times go down
Cover special events like parades, protests, and large public gatherings
Support neighbourhood-specific concerns alongside other WPS units
Operate seven days a week, staffed by 32 officers in total
Mayor Scott Gillingham noted the unit is meant to give residents more confidence that when they call, help shows up sooner.
It's a behind-the-scenes change, but one that should make a real difference for everyday Winnipeggers.
