Winnipeg's Mosquito Control Program Is Officially Underway

Source: City of Winnipeg
You know that first warm evening when you're sitting on the patio, finally enjoying the weather, and then comes the tiny buzz in your ear.
The first mosquito bite of the year. It's almost a Winnipeg rite of passage.
That's why the city isn't waiting around. Crews kicked off the mosquito control program last week, with vehicles, ground teams, and four helicopters already out treating standing water across the city before larvae get the chance to hatch.
Here's how the program works:
A 100% biorational larviciding approach, meaning it's environmentally friendly
Crews monitor and treat 28,000+ hectares of water based on weather conditions
Adult mosquito fogging only happens if specific conditions are met, with 24-hour public notice before any treatment
If you'd rather keep fogging away from your home, you can apply for a 90-metre buffer zone, which keeps treatments at least 90 metres from your property.
A couple of things to know:
Applications need at least 72 hours to process
Submit early so you're covered before fogging season really ramps up
If you'd like to help, dumping out bird baths, buckets, kiddie pools, and clogged eavestroughs makes a real difference for the whole neighbourhood.
Standing water is where mosquitoes get their start, and a quick walk around the yard once a week goes a long way, especially with the little ones spending more time outside.

Winnipeg's Military Flyby Has Been Rescheduled

Source: Government of Canada
If you were looking forward to seeing some jets in the sky over Winnipeg this week, you'll have to wait just a little longer.
A planned Royal Canadian Air Force flyby was postponed due to this week's wind warning and has been rescheduled for May 20th.
Here's what to expect:
A CC-130H Hercules and two CF-18 Hornet fighter jets will fly over 17 Wing Winnipeg in St. James
The flyby honours the end of the Hercules' long service as an air-to-air refuelling aircraft, a mission that wrapped up in April 2026
The Hercules will continue on in search and rescue and transport missions, so this is a send-off for one chapter, not the whole plane
It's a small piece of Canadian air force history flying right over our city, and not something you get to see every day.
So be sure to keep an eye on the skies around 3PM on May 20 if you’re near St. James!
P.S. Share this with your group chats so no one misses it next week!

Winnipeg Is Looking to Give Eight Historic Buildings a Second Life

Source: Manitoba Historical Society
Some of Winnipeg’s oldest public buildings could soon be getting a second life.
The City just put out a call for a consultant to study green upgrade options for eight civic buildings across the city. The goal is to cut fossil fuel use by 50% and reduce water consumption by 20% at each site.
The buildings included in the study are:
Old St. Boniface Fire Hall, 212 Dumoulin St. (built in 1907, currently with no working heat source)
St. Boniface City Hall historic site, 219 Provencher Blvd.
St. James-Assiniboia Library, 1910 Portage Ave. (built in 1958)
NorWest Resource Centre, 1880 Alexander Ave.
Festival du Voyageur offices, 233 Provencher Blvd.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Station 23, 880 Dalhousie Dr.
Fire Paramedic Service Academy, 2546 McPhillips St.
Public works yard and offices, 1539 Waverley St.
A final report with recommendations for each building is expected in early 2027.
No costs for the upgrades have been shared yet, but this is a meaningful first step toward bringing some of the city's most storied buildings into the future.
