Winnipeg Police Officers to Be Stationed at HSC 24/7

Source: HR Law Canada

In August, those working inside HSC made it clear how serious the safety concerns had become. Ninety-four per cent of nurses voted to “grey list” the hospital, a strong move meant to discourage others from working there.

The vote followed a string of crimes in July, including the sexual assaults of five people, with two of them being nurses.

It was a turning point that put a spotlight on what staff and patients had been experiencing day after day. Now, the province is responding with new measures aimed at making HSC safer for both staff and patients.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • Two Winnipeg Police Service officers will now be on site in the ER around the clock

  • New weapon scanners are being installed at main entrances

  • Security teams and institutional safety officers will continue working together with police

  • Other upgrades include fewer access points into the hospital and safer tunnel systems

For many of us, HSC is more than just a hospital. It’s where we’ve sat with family, worried through long nights, and trusted others to care for the people we love most.

These changes are meant to ease some of the worry, so when you walk through those doors, the focus can stay on getting the help you need.

Two New Measles Exposure Sites in Winnipeg

Winnipeg has always been a place where neighbours look out for one another, and health updates like this remind us how connected we all are. Public health officials have shared two new measles exposure sites, and they’re encouraging folks to keep an eye on symptoms in the weeks ahead.

What you need to know:

  • Sept. 3: Walk-In Connected Care, 363 McGregor St., 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m. — anyone present should monitor for symptoms until Sept. 25

  • Sept. 5: Victoria Hospital Urgent Care, 2340 Pembina Hwy., 10:15 a.m.–2:15 p.m. — monitor for symptoms until Sept. 27

  • Anyone born in 1970 or later is encouraged to check their vaccine records to confirm they’ve had two doses of the measles vaccine

  • Early symptoms include fever, cough, tiredness, red eyes, and a rash that spreads from the face down

Health care in this city touches all of us, whether it’s sitting beside a sick child, helping an aging parent, or seeking care ourselves. Taking the time to double-check vaccinations and be mindful of symptoms is one of the simplest ways we can protect one another.

In a city as close-knit as ours, those small steps matter. Looking out for each other has always been a Winnipeg way, and it’s how we keep our community strong.

Wab Kinew is Still Canada’s Most Popular Premier

Source: The Hub

Here in Manitoba, it’s not every day that our province lands in the national spotlight. But right now, Premier Wab Kinew is making headlines across Canada for being the country’s most popular premier.

For a lot of us, it feels like a reminder that people are paying attention to what’s happening here at home.

Here’s what the latest poll shows:

  • Wab Kinew remains Canada’s most popular premier

  • His approval rating slipped slightly since June, but he’s still in the top spot nationally

  • Manitobans continue to show strong trust and confidence in his leadership

Polls don’t capture every detail of a leader’s work, but they do reflect how trust and confidence are built over time. For Manitobans, seeing our premier at the top of a national ranking feels bigger than politics.

It’s a sign that the values we carry here at home are being noticed across the country.

City Updates

Winnipeg Moves Toward New Rules on Homeless Encampments

Source: End Homelessness Winnipeg

As schools start back up and families return to parks, pools, and community spaces, the Winnipeg City Council is one step closer to introducing new rules about where homeless encampments can and can’t be set up.

  • Encampments would be banned within 50 metres of playgrounds, pools, spray pads, schools, and community centres

  • They would also be restricted near transit shelters, bridges, docks, piers, and rail lines

  • Bylaw officers with special training would handle enforcement, focusing mostly during the day

  • And the city will work with outreach providers to give notice and connect people with shelter options before clearing a site

Mayor Scott Gillingham says the goal is balance: keeping public spaces safe and accessible for kids and families, while also recognizing the struggles of those without housing.

Local groups like End Homelessness Winnipeg stress that compassion has to stay at the heart of this work, since every person in an encampment is still part of our community.

And as neighbours, it’s worth remembering that behind every tent is a person with a story. Someone who, just like us, deserves safety, dignity, and a place to call home.
