Extreme Cold Warning For Manitoba
This weekend was a tough one for Winnipeg. The cold was so harsh, with wind chills as low as -43, that Environment and Climate Change Canada had to issue an extreme cold warning. It wasn’t just cold—it was dangerous.
When it gets this cold, it’s more than just bundling up. It’s about taking care of each other. We all know someone who might need extra support—a parent who’s getting older, a friend with little kids, or a neighbor living alone. These temperatures are hard on everyone, but they’re especially dangerous for the most vulnerable.
So, what can we do?
Check in on loved ones. A quick call or visit to an older family member or neighbor can go a long way.
Know the signs of hypothermia. If someone is confused, shivering, or struggling to speak, it could be serious. Call 9-1-1 immediately.
Keep pets safe. Bring them inside and limit their time outdoors. They feel the cold too.
Find a warm place if needed. City facilities are open to help anyone escape the chill.
Winnipeg winters may be tough, but our community is tougher. So like every year, let’s keep each other safe and make it through this cold snap together. 💙

New Pickleball Courts Coming to Winnipeg in 2025
Pickleball is taking over Winnipeg, and it’s no surprise why. This fun, fast-paced sport is perfect for people of all ages, combining the best parts of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Whether you’re looking for a way to stay active, meet new people, or embrace your competitive side, pickleball has something for everyone.
As reported by Global News, the sport’s growth in Manitoba is nothing short of incredible. “We are increasing anywhere from 50-60 members a month,” says Pickleball Manitoba president Ted Fardoe. And it’s not just about local players, Pickleball Manitoba will also be hosting the national championships in 2025, bringing 600 to 700 athletes from across Canada right here to Winnipeg.
To keep up with demand, two new indoor facilities are set to open this year:
Headingley Facility: A 24,000-square-foot space with indoor and outdoor courts, a sports medicine area, a restaurant, and a shop.
Picklr Location: The first Canadian franchise of this American chain, featuring 10-12 indoor courts and possibly outdoor options too.
With all this excitement, 2025 is the year to try pickleball. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, grab a paddle and join the fun. We’ll, of course, keep you updated on when these facilities are about to open, and who knows—maybe our community can have a friendly tournament there!
And before you go, be sure to reply to the poll at the end of this email about pickleball. We’d love to hear your thoughts!🏓

Winnipeg Humane Society Needs Our Help
The Winnipeg Humane Society is going through a really tough time, and they need our support. As reported by CBC News, with over 350 animals in their care and limited space, they’re doing everything they can—but it’s not easy.
Here’s why it’s so challenging right now:
Two large dog seizures in 2024 brought in over 200 dogs living in terrible conditions.
Rising surrenders due to inflation have left many unable to afford vet care.
Longer stays for animals who need extra care are creating a space crunch.
The Humane Society is at its limit, but this is where we can step in. Whether it’s fostering, adopting, or donating, every bit helps. Let’s show how much our community cares by giving these animals a chance at the happy, healthy lives they deserve.

City Updates
Winnipeg’s New Train Detection System

Source: Rail Pictures
Ever been running late, and a train decides to slow you down even more? It’s a frustration all Winnipeggers know too well, but a new train detection system might finally offer some relief.
As reported by CTV News, developed by Winnipeg-based company Trainfo, this new technology will notify drivers when a train is approaching, giving them time to choose an alternate route. Even better, it’s designed to help first responders like paramedics and firefighters save critical time during emergencies.
The project, costing $421,680, is funded by Transport Canada and local developers.
Here’s what it will bring:
Signals and signage at busy crossings to alert drivers early.
Real-time updates for emergency crews to plan faster routes.
The city’s traffic management center will share updates to keep everyone informed.
It’s exciting to see this kind of innovation coming from a local company. Projects like this not only solve everyday frustrations but also showcase what Winnipeg has to offer.
Children’s Hospital Sees Rise in Cases
As reported by CBC News, Winnipeg’s Children’s Hospital is seeing a rise in respiratory illnesses, with RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and the flu leading the way. RSV is a common virus that can feel like a mild cold for adults but can be serious for babies and young children, especially those under 12 months.
The hospital is treating about 160 kids every day—up from 120 just a few weeks ago. While they’ve increased staffing to handle the surge, prevention is still key. Here’s how we can help keep our community healthy:
Flu shots: Vaccines are the best defense for flu season.
Wash hands often: It’s simple but makes a big difference.
Avoid kissing babies: RSV spreads easily through close contact, and little ones are at the highest risk.
The hospital is doing its best, but let’s all pitch in by taking extra precautions. Together, we can protect our kids and support families through this tough season.
