Winnipeg’s Spring Giveaway Weekend Returns Next Month
There’s something about spring in Winnipeg that just feels right. The sun sticks around a little longer, the snow piles finally disappear, and suddenly everyone’s out there sweeping, planting, and giving old things a fresh start.
It’s one of the best times to feel connected to the city. And this year, Winnipeg’s bringing back two major programs to help us live a little more sustainably.
Here’s what’s happening:
Spring Giveaway Weekend (May 10–11): Leave your reusable, unwanted items out on your curb with a "FREE" sign and help them find a new home. You can also spend the weekend driving around and seeing what treasures your neighbours are giving away. (Just make sure to skip anything unsafe, with bed bugs, or old toilets.)
Free Compost Pickup (May 9–11): Pick up some fresh, ready-to-use compost for your garden. Bring your own pails, gloves, and shovel to Brady Road, Kilcona Dog Park, or Summit Road. There’s a five-pail limit per vehicle.
And just a little reminder: curbside yard waste collection starts next week, too. It’s a great time to clear up the yard and make sure everything’s ready for summer. (Just no plastic bags, please.)

Bike to First Fridays This Week
With First Friday happening once again this week, Winnipeg’s about to come alive in the best way. The Exchange District will be packed with open galleries, pop-up markets, and that electric buzz you only get when the whole city comes out to play.
It’s the kind of night that reminds you why we love downtown. And now with summer around the corner, this year, once again, getting there is part of the fun!
Here’s what’s happening:
First Fridays Bike-In kicks off May 2.
Meet at Linden Meadows School at 6 p.m. or hop on at pit stops like Van Walleghem Park Bridge, Bill & Helen Norrie Library, or the Manitoba Legislature.
Guided by Bike Winnipeg, showing you the safest, chillest way into the heart of the Exchange.
Every First Friday all summer will start from a different neighbourhood, giving you new routes to explore each month.
All rides end at Old Market Square, just in time to soak up the art, culture, food, and good energy of First Fridays.
So if you’re looking for a fun way to roll into the Exchange, feel a little more connected to the city, and maybe discover a new favorite artist or market, this is your night.
Reminder: Keep Your Yard in Shape
With May kicking off this week, we’re trying to get you all the updates and reminders you need — and here’s another one!
Here are a few friendly reminders from the City of Winnipeg if you’re getting ready to tackle your yard:
Grass needs to stay under 6 inches (15 cm) tall, even on boulevards
Weeds like thistle should be removed, cut, or treated properly
Boulevard gardens are welcome, but you still need to follow the grass and weed rules
Trees and shrubs should be planted with enough space so they don’t block sidewalks or mess with underground pipes
And if you’re planting anything new, don’t forget to click or call before you dig.
It’s the season for fresh starts, and a little yard love now will make all the difference when summer’s in full swing.

Jets Game 5 Set for Wednesday
It’s a little tough to say, but we dropped Game 3 to the Blues on Thursday. As we’re writing this newsletter, the Jets are getting ready for a big Game 4 today. Hopefully, we can pull it off and come back home ready to finish the series in five!
Here’s the scoop if you’re making plans:
Game 5 is on Wednesday, April 30
Puck drop is at 8:30 p.m. at Canada Life Centre
The Jets have won both home games so far in front of a sold-out Whiteout, so let’s hope they can close it out on Wednesday
If all goes well, it could be a pretty special night downtown.
City Updates
Measles Cases Are Rising: Stay Protected
With two new measles cases popping up last week, it’s a good reminder that a little precaution can go a long way. Growing up, many of us never had to worry about measles thanks to vaccines. But now, with the largest outbreak since 1998 happening across Canada, it’s more important than ever to make sure we’re protected.
This week is National Immunization Awareness Week, and here’s what you should know:
If you were born in 1985 or later, you can check your vaccine records through the provincial registry
If you were born between 1970 and 1984, you might only need one dose if you missed it
If you were born before 1970, you’re usually considered immune
Vaccines save lives — and getting yours updated is quick and easy through your doctor, pharmacist, or public health clinic.
So please check if you’ve been immunized, and if you haven’t, be sure to get it. A few minutes today could protect you and the people around you for life.
Have Your Say on Manitoba’s Economic Plan
With everything going on, from rising costs to new tariffs, it is more important than ever for Manitoba to have a plan that puts our future in our own hands.
The province is working on a new Economic Development Strategy to help build a strong, resilient economy that supports good jobs, higher wages, and a better quality of life for everyone in Winnipeg and across rural and northern Manitoba.
That is why the government is asking for your feedback and consultation through their survey. Whether you run a business, work in trades, or just want more opportunities for your kids, your voice matters.
The consultation will stay open until May 20th.
So, click below to take the survey and help have a say in Manitoba's Economic Development Strategy.

City Hosting Public Sessions on Housing Changes This Week
As we’ve mentioned before, the City is hosting public sessions to talk about new zoning changes that could bring more housing options to Winnipeg. The idea is to make it easier to build two-unit, three-unit, and four-unit homes in many neighbourhoods — and allow taller four-unit homes near major bus routes.
The public info sessions start tomorrow, April 29, and run through to May 6.
Here’s what you need to know:
Five in-person events are happening across Winnipeg
Learn about changes to things like height rules, landscaping, and setbacks
It’s a come-and-go format, so you can drop by when it works for you
These changes could help make housing more affordable for families, students, and new homeowners.
Be sure to swing by the one closest to you if you want to see what’s being proposed!
