Free Home Upgrades Available Through New Manitoba Program

Keeping up with heating bills has been tough for many Manitobans, especially with cold winters and rising costs. Now, help is on the way.

The federal government is putting $30 million into Manitoba to launch the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, and it’s starting with a simple goal: make energy-saving upgrades accessible to the people who need them most.

Here’s what’s included:

  • Free home improvements like insulation, air sealing, upgraded windows, and heat pumps

  • Open to low- to median-income households, including both homeowners and renters

  • No loans, no upfront costs, Efficiency Manitoba manages everything directly

  • Also supports Indigenous communities and organizations with streamlined access

  • And best of all? It pairs well with other rebates like the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program

It’s a first-of-its-kind rollout here in Manitoba, which is leading the way thanks to its strong track record in energy efficiency.

For families trying to stretch every dollar, this could mean warmer winters, lower bills, and peace of mind, without the stress of major renovation costs.

Restaurant of the Week: Modern Electric Lunch

We stopped by Modern Electric this weekend for a slow brunch and left wondering why we hadn’t made it a habit sooner. Tucked inside the historic Fortune Block on Main Street, this 75-year-old space has been lovingly transformed into one of Winnipeg’s most inviting breakfast and lunch spots.

The vibe? Cozy, sunlit, and always buzzing. The menu? Curated comfort food with big flavours and a bit of flair. Nothing too fussy, just really, really good.

Why we’ll be back soon:

  • A 4.6-star spot with nearly 500 reviews (and plenty of regulars to match)

  • A curated menu with standouts like the cochinita hash, sumac chicken fatteh, and Thai tea lattes

  • Vegan and gluten-friendly options that make it easy for everyone to enjoy

  • A lively weekend brunch crowd, but with staff who keep things welcoming and kind

City Updates

Manitoba Invests $20M in Permanent Home for Truth and Reconciliation Centre

Source: National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

Every family in this city carries stories. Some joyful, some painful. And for many Indigenous families in Manitoba, those stories include generations shaped by the legacy of residential schools. Now, there's a new place being built to honour those truths and carry them forward.

The Manitoba government is investing $20 million to create a permanent home for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) at the University of Manitoba.

  • The new space will rise on the former Southwood Golf and Country Club site

  • It will hold sacred items, oral histories, and records from residential school survivors

  • The centre will include exhibits, ceremonial spaces, and classrooms for public learning

  • It’s being built as an international learning lodge, open to all

  • And is designed to support ongoing research, education, and dialogue rooted in the 94 Calls to Action

Premier Wab Kinew called it a commitment, a lasting promise that the voices of survivors will be protected and remembered, not just today, but for generations.

It’s more than just a building. It’s a space for learning, healing, and walking the path forward together. A place where reconciliation isn’t just a word, but something alive and ongoing.

Manitoba Signs Lease for New 75,000 sq. ft. Recovery Centre in Winnipeg

Source: Bruce Oake Memorial Foundation Inc.

The province has officially signed a long-term lease for the future Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre, marking a major step forward in bringing the project to life.

Planned for a 75,000-sq.-ft. space beside Victoria Hospital, the centre will be led by the Bruce and Anne Oake Memorial Foundation. It’s built around Anne Oake’s belief that recovery should never mean being separated from family.

Here’s what’s planned:

  • Treatment beds and a licensed on-site child care centre, so moms can stay with their kids

  • Part of a broader strategy to support Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ communities

  • Total fundraising goal: $25 million, with the campaign still ongoing

Every part of this centre, from the walls to the childcare rooms, has been shaped with dignity, safety, and support in mind. The lease signing signals that this vision is moving from planning to reality.

It’s a project grounded in love, and a legacy that will carry hope forward for countless Manitoba families.

Winnipeg School Reports Possible Measles Exposure During First Week Back

The first week of school is usually all about routines: packing lunches, adjusting sleep schedules, and easing back into the rhythm of busy days. But for some families at Carpathia School, it came with an extra layer of worry.

Public health officials are now asking anyone who was at Carpathia School (300 Carpathia Rd.) during the first week of September, including those in the breakfast and lunch programs, to watch for signs of measles and check their vaccination records.

Here’s what to know:

  • Possible exposure dates: Sept. 3, 4, 5, and 8, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

  • Watch for symptoms (like fever, red eyes, or a rash) until Sept. 25–30

  • If you were born in 1970 or later and haven’t had the measles vaccine, it’s time to get one

  • Some people, like infants, pregnant women, or those with weakened immune systems, should call their doctor for next steps

  • Anyone with symptoms should stay home and call ahead to avoid spreading the virus

It’s a reminder that even small exposures can ripple through a community. The best way to protect each other, especially the most vulnerable, is to stay informed and take a moment to check those records.

So if you know someone with kids at Carpathia or who lives nearby, be sure to share the link below.
