Winnipeg Transit Adds Late Night Bus Service on 11 New Routes

Source: City of Winnipeg

Winnipeg Transit just shared a plan to extend service past midnight on 11 major routes. Something many riders have been asking for, especially those working late shifts or studying late on campus.

The changes are part of a bigger effort to make getting around safer and more reliable no matter the time of day. If the proposal is approved, the new hours would roll out in April 2026 as part of the spring schedule.

Here’s what’s included in the plan:

  • 11 major routes would run until after midnight, connecting areas like downtown, Kildonan Place, RRC Polytech, Charleswood, U of M, and Health Sciences Centre.

  • Focusing on helping late-shift workers, hospital staff, and students get home more safely

  • With Route 680’s weekday extension adding more coverage where it's needed most

And here’s what’s already confirmed to roll out sooner (starting December 14):

  • On-Request service zones will run until 2 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, and 12:45 a.m. on Sundays and holidays

  • Zone 103 will expand to include Garden City Shopping Centre and Walmart

  • And schedule fixes for routes that are regularly late and added trips for busy school routes

It’s not instant. The city still needs time to hire more drivers, rewrite schedules, and secure the budget. But more late-night transit could mean fewer stressful commutes and safer trips home.

It’s a small change with a big impact, especially for folks who keep the city running after dark. And as we know, the launch of the new transit system has been far from smooth. But something like this shows the city is listening.

Daylight Time Ended Sunday Morning

Manitobans officially switched back to standard time at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, setting clocks back by one hour.

If you haven’t already, this is your friendly reminder to update the rest of your clocks (microwave, car, wall clock). It’s also a good time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms while you’re at it; fresh batteries go a long way!

Free Radon Kits to Help Prevent Cancer

Source: City of Winnipeg

This might be one of the most quietly important things you do this year. You can now borrow a free radon screening kit from any Winnipeg Public Library branch, just like you would a book.

For some context: Radon is an invisible gas that’s in most homes across the country, and it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. You can’t smell it, see it, or taste it, but you can test for it. And now, it’s easier than ever.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Free radon screening kits available to borrow at all 20 Winnipeg library branches

  • Borrow just like a book; each kit includes a monitor and guide

  • Available from November to April, when readings are more accurate

To use it, simply place the kit on the lowest level of your home and leave it undisturbed for at least 7 days. Then, return it to the library and check your results. (See manual for full instructions)

It’s a small action that could make a big difference. Over 40% of homes in Manitoba may have elevated radon levels, so if you’ve never tested for radon in your home, be sure to click the button below to see how you can borrow a kit and test now!

Jets Beat Penguins 5-2 to End 8 Game Winning Streak

Saturday’s game at Canada Life Centre was one to remember. The Jets snapped the Penguins’ 8-game point streak with a confident 5–2 win, and now sit just one point behind the Colorado Avalanche in the Central Division standings!

Here’s what stood out from the night:

  • Kyle Connor scored two goals, including a shorthanded penalty shot

  • Jets led 2–0 just 2:43 into the first period, with Gabriel Vilardi opening the scoring

  • Rookie Brad Lambert netted his first NHL goal, tapping one in from the crease

The Jets have now won three straight and are looking faster, sharper, and more confident each game.

Not to mention, Scheifele just became the first player in the NHL to hit 20 points this season, and with Connor, Vilardi, and rookie Lambert all stepping up, this team is finding its rhythm.

And it’s about to get even better: Our captain, Adam Lowry is likely making his season debut Tuesday against the LA Kings.

He’s been skating in full practices and could be cleared to play after Monday. His return adds leadership, grit, and depth down the middle at the perfect time of year.

City Updates

Winnipeg Police Now Stationed 24/7 at HSC Emergency Room

Safety has been a growing concern for staff, patients, and families walking through the doors at HSC, especially in recent months. For those working long shifts or walking into the ER late at night, the need for stronger support has been clear.

That’s why, as of November 1, uniformed Winnipeg Police officers are now stationed 24-7 at HSC’s adult emergency department to help ensure safety and peace of mind.

Here’s what’s in place now:

  • Two Winnipeg Police officers are on-site around the clock in the adult ER

  • Working closely with Institutional Safety Officers (ISOs) and hospital security

  • All public entrances now have screening staff and enhanced access controls

  • Over 260 new security cameras installed across the HSC campus

  • And weapons scanners have also been added to adult and children’s ERs, plus the crisis centre

These changes didn’t just show up overnight. They come from conversations, concerns, and the belief that safety should never be a barrier to care.

Whether you're working late, rushing in with a loved one, or facing an emergency yourself, knowing there's help nearby matters. It’s a quiet change, but a meaningful one.

P.S. Know someone who works in health care? Send this their way; they’ll want to hear about it.

Winnipeg Steps Up Fight Against Arson With Citywide Safety Efforts

Fires don’t just destroy buildings, they shake entire communities. From families losing homes to businesses closing their doors, arson leaves lasting scars.

And that’s why the City of Winnipeg is taking stronger, coordinated action to reduce the risk and protect neighbourhoods.

Here’s what’s happening across the city:

  • 9,600+ vacant building inspections to make sure properties stay secure

  • 378 buildings boarded up under new, stricter safety rules

  • 372 tonnes of debris cleared from high-risk areas

  • 177 arson cases investigated and 23 people charged so far

  • With daily coordination between fire, police, and bylaw teams to identify and prevent risks

City officials are asking residents to keep an eye out: report unsecured buildings, illegal dumping, or suspicious activity before it turns dangerous. Every call helps.

It’s a tough problem, but the message is simple: when we all pay attention, we make our city safer for everyone.

So let’s do our part: keep an eye on our neighbourhoods, report unsecured properties, dumping, or anything suspicious before it turns into something worse.
