Inspiring Winnipeg’s Future Athletes

Source: Skylar.park Instagram

Skylar Park just came back from the Paris Olympics with a bronze medal in taekwondo, and the whole city showed up to welcome her home.

But here’s the thing—it’s not just about the medal. It’s about what this means for every kid in Winnipeg who’s got a dream.

Seeing Skylar succeed on the world stage is like a shot of pure inspiration. It’s like she’s telling every young athlete, "Hey, if I can do it, so can you." And that’s huge. Her story is proof that with hard work, and a solid support system—like the one she’s got in her family—you can achieve big things.

This isn’t just a win for Skylar; it’s a win for our entire community. And a reminder that we’ve got some serious talent here in Winnipeg, and that the next generation has some big shoes to fill. But with role models like Skylar, they’re off to a pretty great start.

Last Chance: Mini Folk-Fest in Downtown Winnipeg!

Summer’s not over until we say it is—and we’re closing it out with one final event!

This Friday and Saturday, August 16-17, head downtown to Hargrave St. Market for the Heart of the City Music Festival. For just $20, you get two nights of live music, cold drinks, and mouthwatering food.

We’re talking about local favorites like Neighbour Andy, Apollo Suns, and more, all performing in the heart of downtown’s brand-new True North Square. With food trucks, outdoor bars, and a vibe that’ll make you wish summer lasted forever, this is the kind of night you’ll be reminiscing about long after the leaves start to fall.

We’ll be there too, soaking up the music, meeting new friends, and celebrating everything that makes Winnipeg, well, Winnipeg.

Don’t miss out—this is your last chance to make these summer nights count! See you at Hargrave St. Market!

Manitoba’s New Push to Keep Families Together

The Manitoba government is dropping over $500,000 into three key programs designed to help keep families together, especially those who need extra support. Here’s the rundown:

  • $183,000 to Blue Thunderbird Family Care’s Grandmother’s Council Program, which brings Indigenous knowledge and guidance into the mix.

  • $150,000 to the Islamic Social Services Association to hire a social worker and counsellor for their Family Supports Services Programming, offering emotional and financial support.

  • $200,000 to Acorn Family Place for their Wrap Around Program, focused on early intervention and keeping families out of the child welfare system.

It’s all about providing the right support at the right time, making sure families can stay connected and thrive.

Winnipeg Transit On-Request: New Zones, New App

Starting September 1st, they’re expanding into northwest Winnipeg, adding a new service zone. And, they’re rolling out a brand-new app on August 27th.

If you’re in the new zone, this means more reliable and convenient transit options right in your neighborhood. The On-Request service has been a hit so far, and this expansion is just another way Winnipeg is becoming more connected. So, if you’re in the northwest, get ready to enjoy easier commutes and better access to all the essentials.

Cellphone Ban in Schools? Manitoba’s Next Move

As reported by the Canadian Press, after Saskatchewan dropped a province-wide ban on cellphones in schools, Manitoba might be next. Right now, each school division here decides how to handle phones in class, but that could change soon.

Parents, teachers, and students are all waiting to see if Manitoba will follow suit with its own ban. If it happens, it could mean less screen time and more focus in classrooms, which could be a game-changer for student success. Keep an ear out for the update later this week—things might be shaking up in our schools soon.

Free Education Programs? Yes, Please!

Red River College Polytechnic is teaming up with the Winnipeg School Division to offer free education programs to locals. Here’s how they’re doing it:

  • Cost-free programs: Thanks to WSD’s funding, these programs are available at no charge.

  • Flexible scheduling: Classes are offered during and outside regular work hours, making it easier to fit into your life.

  • Real credentials: Participants can work toward official RRC Polytech credentials while gaining valuable skills.

  • Inclusivity focus: The partnership aims to engage First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students, making education more accessible for everyone.

This collaboration is all about making education affordable, accessible, and tailored to the community's needs.
