Hey Winnipegers!

Today’s newsletter is a bit longer than usual—summer’s winding down, and there’s just so much happening around our city! I’ve done my best to summarize everything, but I apologize if it’s a bit much.

Also, there’s a poll at the end! If we put on an event for our community, would you come? Please only answer if you’d be interested, and let me know what type of event you’d like to attend.

Thanks for sticking with me, and I hope you enjoy the newsletter!

Restaurant of the Week: Avril's Baked Joy

Source: Avril’s Baked Joy FB Page

This hidden gem is quickly becoming famous for serving up some of the most delicious cookies in the city, and they’re flying off the shelves—literally, they often sell out by noon! With over six mouthwatering flavors like matcha and red velvet, it’s no wonder people can’t get enough.

Started by an international student just over a year ago, this Vietnamese bakery also offers cake boxes, pastries, and the best tiramisu cake in Winnipeg (trust me, I’ve tried it). It’s the perfect spot to indulge your sweet tooth.

I got the chance to check it out, and if you’re curious to see what makes these cookies so special, head over to our Instagram for a sneak peek. This is one spot every Winnipegger needs to visit!

Honoring Tina Fontaine’s Legacy

We usually keep things upbeat here, staying away from much politics and murder. But some stories are too important not to share.

This month marks ten years since the tragic death of Tina Fontaine, a 15-year-old whose loss brought national attention to the safety of Indigenous women.

As reported by the Winnipeg Sun, events are planned to honor her memory, including gatherings at the Alexander Docks and The Forks. These events remind us of the ongoing need to support and protect Indigenous women in our community. Let’s come together to remember Tina and continue the push for meaningful change.

Outdoor Pools and Spray Pads Closing Soon

Summer’s wrapping up, and so are Winnipeg’s outdoor pools and spray pads. Starting August 14, these facilities will begin closing for the season, with most done by September 2. It’s been a great summer of fun in the sun, and these spots have been a big part of keeping us cool. If you haven’t had your fill yet, now’s the time to enjoy these last few days at the pool!

Plan20-50 Hearing Draws Huge Crowd

As reported by The Winnipeg Sun, the final public hearing for the Plan20-50 development plan had to be postponed after over 500 people showed up to voice their opinions.

Held in Niverville, the crowd was far larger than anticipated, with many people unable to get into the hall. The plan, which would affect zoning, housing, and land use across Winnipeg and surrounding areas, has sparked significant concern among residents.

This delay is a clear sign that our community cares deeply about how these changes will shape the future of our city and region. The hearing will be rescheduled to a larger venue to ensure everyone has a chance to be heard, showing the power of community involvement.

Winnipeg’s Real Estate Market on the Rise

Source: Winnipeg Regional Real Estate Board

Good news for homeowners and potential buyers alike—house sales in the Winnipeg region are on the upswing!

As reported by the Winnipeg Regional Real Estate Board, July saw a 10% increase in home sales compared to last year, with over $580 million in transactions. Areas like Gimli and Niverville are booming, showing strong community growth. This is great news for our local economy, with more families finding homes and neighborhoods thriving. Whether you’re buying, selling, or just curious, it’s clear that Winnipeg’s real estate market is on the rise.

CentrePort South Development Breaks Ground

Exciting developments are underway with the groundbreaking of CentrePort South, a massive project that’s set to transform part of Winnipeg’s landscape. This development will span 1,800 acres, featuring both residential and industrial spaces. The project promises to create thousands of jobs and generate significant tax revenue for the city.

For our community, this means more opportunities—whether it’s new jobs, new homes, or new businesses, CentrePort South is poised to become a hub of growth and innovation. With support from various levels of government, this project is a big step forward for Winnipeg’s future, making our city even more connected to international trade and economic progress.
