Winnipeg Bridges Get New Murals
Source: Cool Streets Winnipeg
Cool Streets Winnipeg, in collaboration with the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain, is transforming eight bridges across the city with vibrant murals this summer.
The first completed mural, titled "Leapfrog," is on the Niakwa Road Bridge and features lily pads inspired by artist Kale Sheppard's childhood memories. This mural invites pedestrians to stop, admire, and interact with the artwork beneath their feet.
On the Niakwa Trail Bridge, artist Mike Zastre is working on a dramatic mural depicting a sperm whale battling a giant squid. This design symbolizes personal struggles and encourages more people to explore the trail.
These colorful additions, part of the seventh year of the Cool Streets Winnipeg project, have become a beloved annual event. So, keep an eye out for these beautiful murals as you walk, bike, or roll through Winnipeg this summer!
Winnipeg Police Target Speeders in Construction Zones
As reported by CTV News, since March 15, Winnipeg police have been cracking down on speeding in the construction zone at St. Mary’s Road and the south Perimeter Highway. They've issued a staggering 14,183 tickets so far.
In the first two weeks alone, nearly 500 tickets were handed out daily. The highest recorded speed was 76 km/h over the limit, resulting in a $2,040 fine.
Police and construction workers stress the importance of these efforts for everyone's safety. Let's slow down and keep our roads safe!

This 25-foot-tall thorana features over 7,000 lights and 15 paintings that tell a Buddhist story of peace and reconciliation. You can catch this dazzling display at 88 Cadboro Road from June 22 to June 30, between 10 p.m. and midnight. Don’t miss the Sri Lankan street food sale on June 22 and 23, starting at 8:30 p.m.!
Historic Win for NDP in Tuxedo Byelection
For the first time since its creation, the Tuxedo constituency will be represented by the Manitoba NDP. Carla Compton won the seat in a byelection, defeating the Progressive Conservative candidate by 617 votes.
This marks a shift, as the area has been a stronghold for the PCs since 1981. The seat became vacant following the resignation of former premier Heather Stefanson in April. This victory adds to the NDP's current 34 seats in the legislature, while the PCs hold 21 and the Liberals have 1.
